Item 40 - Cold Weather Shelters Amendment

Colleagues,

The ice storm and its aftermath have made it ever more apparent that the city is in critical need of improving extreme weather planning. I want to thank Council Member Kelly and all cosponsors for bringing forward Item 40. I would like to provide a few amendments that reflect concerns and needs I have heard from constituents and service providers. Most notably, these changes aim to: further evaluate the needs and process for registration, extend the length of time for paused camp cleanups, ensure vulnerable community members in Southeast Austin have access to extreme weather shelter, and create access to shelters for families across the city.
