Resolutions on Electronic Billboards: item #72, #73

Dear CM Colleagues:
I submit these as draft Resolutions for the indicated Agenda items.


PROPOSED RESOLUTION: (Item #72)

RESOLUTION NO._________________ (DRAFT)

WHEREAS, the City of Austin Code, Article 8 of Chapter 25, regulates signs including outdoor billboards; and

WHEREAS, the City of Austin currently prohibits electronic billboards; and

WHEREAS, technology has been changing in the electronic billboard field; and

WHEREAS, from a public safety standpoint, having the ability to rapidly give information to residents and people along the roadway can be critical and life-saving; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN:

The City Manager is directed include electronic billboards in the CodeNEXT process and enable the City to allow electronic billboards.

WHEREAS, the City of Austin currently prohibits electronic billboards; and

WHEREAS, technology has been changing in the electronic billboard field; and

WHEREAS, from a public safety standpoint, having the ability to rapidly give information to residents and people along the roadway can be critical and life-saving; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN:

The City Manager is directed to draft updated ordinances which would enable the City to allow electronic billboards and present these draft ordinances back to Council no later than May 5, 2016.
