Budget Amendment - Social Services Funding
Posted: Thu Jul 30, 2026 7:05 pm
Colleagues,
As I mentioned on the dias, I am committed to restoring our City’s social service net. Last year, the budget included a 10% cut to our social services. This year, we continue to face even more difficult budget decisions.
We must do everything possible to protect the lifelines that prevent crimes before they happen, support youth development, keep families housed and fed, and provide stability for Austin's most at-risk neighbors. Considering the additional $4,700,000 revenue from the revised property tax certifications, my colleagues, CMs Harper-Madison, Siegel, Ellis and Qadri, and I are bringing forward an amendment to use these funds to restore our social services.
Understanding that we may receive additional insights on the evaluation and performance of existing contracts, my hope is that we maintain and prioritize the highest level of social services. We look forward to continuing to work with staff on implementing this amendment. I welcome additional support for this amendment from my colleagues.
