Colleagues,

In response to various budget questions, I've crafted an amendment with significant input from Austin Public Health staff to ensure we are better prepared to monitor and respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, including Monkey Pox.

Staff stated in the Q:A that the proposed FY 2022-23 base budget does not include funding for continued emergency response for COVID or any other outbreaks, including Monkeypox. Additionally, staff have indicated that APH lacks the necessary general fund investment for critical staffing capacity to fully support the community response to disease outbreaks, mitigation, and prevention strategies and that APH currently does not meet the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists optimal level of epidemiologists which directly impacts APH’s ability to respond to COVID and other disease outbreaks which creates critical ongoing gaps.

In the face of new needs, including Monkey Pox, it is vital that we ensure APH is better staffed and equipped to respond. I hope my colleagues will join me in working to advance this amendment.

Let me know if you would like to co-sponsor these important public health investments.
