Posting on behalf of Council Member Flannigan:

Colleagues,

In the ongoing efforts of keeping our policing reform work moving forward, the Public Safety Committee plans to conduct a series of workshops. These workshops will convene as a committee meeting but be focused as an opportunity to facilitate important discussions between community experts and officers working out the details of what reform can mean. The objective is to bring to the forefront an open and public conversation about the challenges we will face implementing these big structural changes.

The first Public Safety Committee Workshop will be Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 2pm, and the agenda has just been posted at http://austintexas.gov/department/city- ... 02-psc.htm. The subject of this workshop will be “General Orders & Tactics” and will bring together officers with focused community experts without the presence of the Chief or the City Manager. The workshop will be broadcast on ATXN. All council members are of course welcome to attend. However, please note that format of this workshop will not be one where the Committee Members are leading the conversation, but rather one where we are listening.

As we continue learning in this work, we may conduct workshops around different areas of budget reforms and metrics/data. I will be sure to keep everyone informed through the message board as these come up. Tentatively we are scheduling additional meetings for July 9, 20 and August 17.

If you plan to attend next week, please alert Patricia Bourenane. Thank you again for everyone’s support and interest in this important work.

on behalf of Council Member Flannigan:

Hello All,

Here is an update for tomorrow’s workshop – a conversation between front line officers and community experts to discuss General Orders and Tactics. The panelists we have lined up for tomorrow are:

Sergeant Mike Crumrine
Officer Anna Jackson
Corporal Marcos Johnson
Officer Thomas Villareal

Rahki Agrawal, MEASURE
Jennifer Laurin, Wright C. Morrow Professor of Law at the UT School of Law
Adriana Pinon, ACLU of Texas
Carl Webb, Community Member, Military Veteran

This will be our first workshop in a series created to tackle the challenges of redefining policing in our community. This is designed as a facilitated conversation among panelists within details laid out in Item 95 (adopted on June 11). If any Council Members believe there are specific questions within that resolution that should be included in the conversation, please reply to this message board post, and I will be sure to introduce the topic.

Our next workshop will be next Thursday, July 9 at 2pm and will offer and address examples of alternatives to policing related to 20200611-096.

Colleagues,

This Thursday, July 9, the Public Safety Committee will have a workshop on improving public safety and preventing harm with investments other than simply police patrol. We’ve invited experts and officers to speak on the following topics and will have some Q&A on each:

· mental health response
· family violence shelter and protection
· addressing homelessness
· treating substance use
· gun violence prevention

Looking forward to a robust discussion.
